Lucite

We use lucite to create many different items.  It can be molded, or cut piece by piece, which are then assembled using a chemical glue solvent which will actually weld or melt the two plastic pieces together.  Our lucite large box is a molded box that has a friction fit bottom on it.  We spot glue the bottom to the box on two of the four corners.  This holds the two pieces firmly together, but also allows for easy opening should a repair be needed.  The cork bark used inside our boxes has rather unique qualities.  The cork tree, from which this bark is stripped, is the only tree in the world that will regrow its bark!  Any other tree would die from the stripping process.   When coated with gloss lacquer, it gives the wood an appearance of stone.  There's a type of marbleing effect that takes place.

Our smaller butterfly boxes are made up of two "U" shaped molded pieces of lucite that snugly fit together.  Once again we glue two sides together to give it a tight fit, but also allow easy access for an necessary repairs.  These boxes are 3 1/2" cubes.  The butterfly is glued to a small piece of cork bark, with several small silk flowers attached around it.

Our lucite frames are designed two different ways.  The first way is the more economical way in which a molded "box frame" is chemically welded to a cut out back piece of approximately 3/16" thick clear lucite.  We then attach a clear sawtooth hanger or two to the back, making every effort possible to hide it with butterflies inside covering up it existence.  These frames have standard sizes of 5"x7" up to 16"x20".  Their depth is approximately 1".

The second type of lucite frame is custom made, using cut pieces of lucite to create a top, bottom, and four sides.  All of these are then solvent glued for strong chemically welded joints.  These lucite frames are by far the nicest presentation for butterflies, and should last many, many years.  Depending on size, there are several options for hanging methods.  When total frame weight allows for it, we use our clear sawtooth hangers for hanging.  Larger pieces might incorporate a method of cutting the back piece slightly oversized, then drilling hanging holes into the top overhang for easy hanging.  Shown are two 24x36x3" made with 3/16" lucite.  The two frames are mirror images of shape, using a male and female Atlas Moth as anchors, finishing up with a clearwing and a Graphium weiskei at the top of each.  These frames have 95 butterflies within them for under $1000!  Each would sell for $600.  We can work with you as far as the butterfly types wanted.  Click here for larger image.
